LAST STAND OF THE REPUBLICANS EMPIRE OR REPUBLIC? The senators gathered in the capitol after they heard Caligula had been assassinated. Many of them believed the time had come to end the imperial system and bring back the republic. Sentius Saturninus denounced Caligula’s tyranny and even suggested they should reward Cassius Chaerea for taking action. His colleagues all agreed. However, the Praetorian Guard had taken Claudius— who was found trembling in terror—into their protection and was demanding that he should succeed his nephew Caligula as emperor. Meanwhile the crowds in the Forum were calling for the assassins to be punished. The senators met with the soldiers and seemed to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Despite this, at a meeting in the Temple of Jupiter the next day, the army proclaimed Claudius as emperor and he received oaths of loyalty from all the soldiers in the city: The republicans had lost. Chaerea was tried and executed shortly afterward. The new emperor did not forget who had given him power, cultivating friendship with the troops throughout his reign.
