NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HISTORY 55 1159 The Heiji Rebellion begins as a direct consequence of the 1156 war. The Heike and the Genji clans fight to become Japan’s dominant power. 1184 The Battle of Ichi-no-Tani takes place. In one of the key episodes of the Gempei War, the Genji clan hero Yoshitsune defeats the Heike. 1185 The important battles of Yashima and Dan-no-ura are fought. Both are won by the Genji clan and help them to secure overall victory. 1189 Yoshitsune, the great Genji hero, is hunted down by his brother for disobedience. Surrounded and outnumbered, Yoshitsune commits suicide.
