He grew his fleet by capturing several merchant vessels, each better armed than the last, and with a larger crew. Canoe Bellamy first used two 29.5 -foot sailing canoes. Sultana Bellamy captured this 200-ton British galley with 26 cannon in 1716. He needed more than 100 men to sail it. Whydah A 300-ton slave ship captured in 1717, this ship sank in a nor’easter. Only 2 of the 146 crew members survived. 4 1716 In the Yucatán Channel, Hornigold and Bellamy capture an English merchant vessel and two Spanish brigantines. 3 1716 Bellamy joins other pirates near Cuba, including Hornigold, who puts him in command of the sloop Marianne. 9 1717 In the Windward Passage, Bellamy sights a slave ship, the Whydah, which he chases and boards. 1 1716 Bellamy travels to Florida to recover treasure from a Spanish shipwreck. He finds 5,000 gold reals. 1717 Bellamy’s crew attack several ships in the Chesapeake Bay, including a 100-ton brigantine. 2 1716 He recruits 40 pirates in the Gulf of Honduras. Together they capture a Dutch ship.
