NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HISTORY 75 Reclaiming an American Rebel the bones of nat turner KELLEY FANTO DEETZ Two hundred twelve years after the first West Africans set foot on Virginia soil, Nat Turner, an enslaved preacher, led a slave rebellion in Southampton, Virginia. It was by no means the first revolt or even the most successful, but to many, Nat Turner’s rebellion stands out from the others for its brutality and its impact on U.S. history. Recently, Nate Parker’s film, The Birth of a Nation, revisited this story and inspired the first steps to reclaiming both the bones and the story of Nat Turner and his rebels.
