Reu- ben, Simeon, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun, sons of Jacob and his first wife, Leah, had tribes named after them. Jacob’s second wife, Rachel, gave birth to Benjamin and Joseph. Benjamin had a tribe named for him, but Joseph did not. His sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, each had tribes bearing their names. The tribes of Gad and Asher were named for the sons of Jacob and Zilpah, Leah’s servant. Jacob’s sons with Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, had the tribes of Dan and Naphtali named for them. Collectively these groups made up the people of Israel. After the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua led the newly freed Israelites to Canaan. He chose one man from each tribe to lead, which is how the lands came to be divided among the Israelites.
