NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HISTORY 23 A bulldozer scales a sand ramp in front of the Great Temple of Ramses II. The ramp provided access to the structure, as well as protection. Power saws are used to cut blocks of stone from the upper part of the Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. Two stonecutters, one Italian the other Egyptian, work together to make a cut in the ceiling of the Great Temple.
